"The barbaric and cynical Russian airstrike on the civilian settlement of Yarova in Ukraine is a horrific war crime," the Polish foreign ministry said on X.

"Targeting elderly civilians collecting pensions shows a complete disregard for human life," it added. "We condemn this brutal attack and offer our condolences to the victims' families."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a guided bomb struck Yarova, a village near the strategic city of Sloviansk, “directly on people, ordinary civilians, at the very moment when pensions were being disbursed.”

He urged Kyiv’s allies to step up pressure on Moscow.

"The world must not remain silent," Zelensky wrote. "The world must not remain idle. A response is needed from the United States. A response is needed from Europe. A response is needed from the G20."
